On the first and third Mondays of each month, St. Philip's receives fresh food from the FoodBank of Delaware for distribution to anyone who is in need and who shows up those mornings. The first clients often arrive before 8:00 a.m., and St. Philip's volunteers begin to arrive at 7:45 a.m.
The first food to arrive each morning is gourmet bread that has been generously donated by a local eatery. That bread is sorted into smaller bags so that each client receives some of this delicious fresh bread.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. the social hall doors are opened and clients are invited to enter, sign in, and enjoy cookies and refreshments while they wait for the food truck. Additionally, if it is a first Monday of the month, while waiting for food, clients are invited to free clothing, which has been delivered from the Clothing Bank of Delaware.
The FoodBank of Delaware truck is scheduled to arrive at 8:30 a.m. and it delivers all varieties of fruits and vegetables based on the season and availability. There are also other occasions when we are blessed to be given other frozen foods and perishable items if they are made available to the FoodBank of Delaware. In the event that there is no food available from the FoodBank of Delaware, St. Philip's draws on food that has been donated by our own members to our food pantry. After waiting for hours we do not want our friends to leave God's House empty handed.
It is our pleasure and purpose to serve these brothers and sisters in Christ. The produce distribution at St. Philips Lutheran Church has been a great benefit to thousands of clients for several years. We serve hundreds of families and individuals through this ministry each and every month.
If you are interested in volunteering or if you need assistance through this ministry, contact the church office and we will connect you with the coordinators of our outreach programs.
